Phase 1 of the HLRN-III system is installed and ready for acceptance

Installation of the HLRN-III system started in mid July 2013, when the storage appliances for the HOME and the WORK file systems were delivered. On July 29th we announced the begin of the data migration from the SGI storage (HLRN-II) to the new Cray storage. Although the storage system in phase 1 comprises only 4 racks, the available disk space is bigger than in the current HLRN-II storage system.

Delivery of the XC30 compute system started on Aug 7th. The system is already up and running and is currently being prepared for the final configuration. The acceptance phase is scheduled for September. We expect to have the first power users on the system in the second week of September. General user access may be enabled around the begin of October.

When it's fully installed (phase 2 in late 2014), the combined HLRN-III system (Berlin plus Hannover) will have a peak performance of about 2.6 PetaFlop/s. The combined storage system will have 7.2 PetaByte of parallel Lustre WORK file system and 1 PetaByte of HOME file system.

HLRN serves scientists from North-German universities and other scientific institutions of the seven states Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein. It covers the huge demand for computing resources in the domains of environmental research, climate and ocean modelling, engineering applications like aerodynamics and ship building, as well as in fundamental research of physics, chemistry, and the life sciences.
